Cicada in Autumn:

  • Natural artifact
  • Arranged and displayed in a museum quality shadow box frame

The bane of nighttime insect collectors the world over – as well as any being with ears unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity of a mass emergence – cicadas are large, fast, and utterly erratic. Their behavior, especially around our light traps, seems to indicate either drunkenness or profound stupidity as they are as likely to fly into your eyes as into the nearby campfire. However, the occasional species exhibits subtlety elegant coloration that belies their often boorish behavior.

Christopher Marley is an artist, designer, photographer and author who uses preserved natural specimens as his medium. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest, then spent over a decade working in dozens of countries in fashion advertising. During his extensive travels, Marley found that there were still enigmatic organisms and minerals to be discovered in each country. His passion for crisp design collided with serendipitous encounters with exquisite insects, minerals, fossils, botanicals and deep sea organisms, and the Christopher Marley lines were created. Marley collects or reclaims his subjects in an environmentally sensitive manner using a worldwide network of people and institutions that share his passion for nature. With a brilliant eye for color, pattern, and texture, Marley explores the deep relationships between vastly different natural objects and the love and unity we intrinsically feel with them and nature as a whole. He maintains design studios in Oregon and Malaysia where he develops innovative methods to preserve natural artifacts of all kinds. His three dimensional art pieces are sold and acclaimed worldwide. His popular first book, Pheromone (Pomegranate, 2008) focused on his artwork with insects and was named one of the best books of the year by The Times (UK). His second book, New York Times Best Selling Biophilia (Abrams, 2015) starts with Marley”s work with insects and moves on to aquatic life, reptiles, birds, plants, and minerals. His work is a tribute to living things and the joy they bring, in the form of exquisite works of art.
