Mainly woven for palaces and by special orders, Savonnerie carpets were produced under the direction of artists of the royal courts. Often echoing the elegant ceilings of the rooms for which they were commissioned, designs consisted of naturalistic floral motifs, coats of arms, heraldic devices and architectural motifs. This hand-knotted Savonnerie rug was produced about 20-30 years ago.
